About Us:

Our school has been in operation since 1997 and serves students in the south Utah County area. The school's head instructor is Mr. Joe Kelly, a 4th Dan in the art of Kyuki-do. Mr. Kelly has over 25 years of coaching, fitness, and teaching experience. Mr. Brad Monson, also a 4th Dan, teaches at the school. Several other black belt instructors are affiliated with our school. Our martial arts school exists to provide individuals and families with the opportunity to grow and learn martial arts skills together. Our classes will increase your physical strength, teach you practical self-defense skills and give you plenty of extra energy.

Head Master Royal West

Head Master Royal West (pictured in center above) is currently the Vice President of the American Kyuki-Do Federation. Master West was one of Grand Master Kim’s first students. Master West has been involved in martial arts for well over thirty years. He has personally trained hundreds of students to the rank of black belt. During his martial arts career, Master West has owned many different martial art schools. Master West also is a physical therapist. Master West is very genuine in caring about people. He is very concerned about student learning and growth. He is one of the greatest instructors in the AKF. Master West is an 8th Dan in Taekwondo, a 7th Dan in Kyuki-D0 and a 1st Dan in Judo.

What is Kyuki-do?

Kyuki-do is a Korean word that translated means "spark or explosion." This means that techniques executed are done with great power and intensity. Often a Kyuki-do technique is accompanied by a Ki-Hap. Translated, Ki-Hap means energy yell. Ki means energy and Hap means to come together.Ki is viewed by Koreans as our life force or energy. When we Ki-Hap we are drawing on that energy. A Ki-Hap gives more power and force to our techniques and our art. In addition, we Ki-Hap to startle our opponents and add greater focus to our techniques. A Ki-Hap is basically a primal yell or scream. What to yell or say in a Ki-Hap is up to personal interpretation as long as it is intense.Kyuki-do is a Korean martial art developed by Grandmaster Ok Hung Kim. Master Kim is a 9th degree black belt in Kyuki-do and Tae Kwon Do, an 8th degree black belt in Judo, and also holds black belts in Hapkido and Karate.Master Kim came to the United States in the 1970s after graduating from the prestigious Yudo College in Korea. After coming to the United States, Master Kim began developing the art of Kyuki-do. Master Kim's idea was to integrate the techniques of Tae Kwon do, Judo, Hapkido, Wrestling, and Jujitsu into one fighting art.In 1979 Master Kim and others formed the "American Kyuki-do Federation." This federation has now grown to be an international federation with over 100,000 members worldwide. The federation is registered and recognized by the Korean Yudo College (Korean National Martial Arts College.)The art of Kyudi-do is a traditional martial art. We emphasize individual character and development of the individual and not on sport competition. Grandmaster Kim has said "the ultimate aim of Kyuki-do lies neither in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants."
